Finch Coasters Running Club
Welcome to Finch Coasters

Finch Coasters is a small and friendly running club based at Finchampstead Sports Club in Finchampstead, near Wokingham, Berkshire. We cover the surrounding area from Arborfield across to Bracknell and Winnersh down to Crowthorne.

Regular club runs take place throughout the week and we can be seen sporting our yellow and blue vests with pride at many local road races, relays and cross-country events. Throughout the winter we compete against local clubs in both the Thames Cross-Country league.

If you want to join us for a run, please feel free to turn up to any of our training venues at the specified times or contact a member of the committee. There's no need to be a member first. On a Thursday night, as many of us as possible try to meet in the Sports Club bar for a drink and a chat, so please come along and join us.

As well as running, we organize a number of annual events such as the Woodland 5 series, the Mud Run and a Club handicap series. We also hold many social events throughout the year including an Annual Dinner Dance, summer BBQs, cheese-and-wine evenings etc. These events are always great fun and well-supported.

Finch Coasters Awards Evening 2012

We celebrated the club’s performances over the last year at the Moat House Hotel in Sindlesham by awarding the prizes for our cross country and club championships.

We had good attendance at the Cross Countries over the last season and fielded a team at every race. The Men’s Championship was hotly contested with several people vying for the title. This was eventually won by Luciano Merolla with Steve Bolt coming in second. Andy Yarrow was also competitive and only missed the last cross country race due to an injury. For the Ladies Championship Sarah Evans won the title ahead of second place Lee Avery.

London Marathon 2012 Race Report

Virgin London Marathon 2012 Race Report

Alice Albrow won the club place in the 2012 London Marathon, and has written the following excellent article for the site.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I first joined a running club in 2003, when I ran with Ranelagh Harriers in West London, and since then I have always hoped to run the London Marathon. In my mid twenties I didn’t feel that I was up to it and always gave the excuse that ‘I needed a few more years training in my legs!’

In 2006, when I had been running with Finchcoasters for a year or so, all of my dreams were crushed when I was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in my left iliac and femoral vein. Running was completely off the cards; I could hardly walk let alone consider running a marathon.

I am a very strong willed character and whilst my life changed dramatically I was not going to let my blood clot hold me back. I very gradually began to walk/jog, then jog and ultimately run.

By 2008 I felt it was time for a challenge and I entered Beachy Head marathon. Many people thought I was a little loopy as Beachy head is so hilly; the thing is the hills mean that many people walk at times and if many people were walking this meant I could walk, when my leg began to hurt, without feeling that I wasn’t being tough enough or anyone asking if I was ok (something that I had been struggling with). I completed the course in 05:36.
